Another reason why critics berate Ray is his penchant for natural and realistic dialogues to be used in movies. This allows little space to dramatise situations. Thus, a scriptwriter is always walking on tightropes of ‘extraordinary observation’ and ‘remarkable memory’. There is no scope for writers to use their own experiences and imagination as Ray believed that a writer should forget his own identity completely, enter the character he is describing and, through the use of dialogue, bring that character to life.
Unlike Mathematics and other related disciplines that deal with numbers, the field of Arts is concerned with human emotions, experiences, and observations. Probably for this reason, its effectiveness and quality cannot be measured on any numeric scale. Time and again, in the world of Literature, among myriad other things, writers, critics and readers have articulated their views and opinions about Style of Writing. And until now, nobody has come to any final and solid conclusion; the debate will continue as long as the moon and sun appear in the sky. However, readers, if not critics, agree that simple writing style is more attractive and consumable.
The secret to excellent writing is to enjoy with ecstatic abandonment each letter and syllable we put down on paper. The pure joy of writing makes us successes; nothing else will. Those who tell us we have to struggle and sweat have not grasped true meaning in their lives. We need no approval of any human to be a success.
