BEFORE YOU READ | The poem you are to read describes the devastation of a person’s mental state when they lose a family member. The tree being talked about in the poem represents a family tree, and the bough (the main branch of a tree) represents the lost person.
When the bough of a tree gets cut
It falls down into the soil
As the other branches watch
Sunk in the deepest despair…
The beautiful leaves of joy
Separate off from the branches
And fly off to some unknown land.
The branches that used to be lush
Weep in endless tears.
Having nobody’s shoulder to cry on
The branches shed tons of tears
Gazing at the prostrate body
Of the loved, lifeless bough.
Their throat aches
Along with their heart,
Heart that had snapped into two.
Weeping makes their eyes swell
And they beg for the presence
Of the bough in their lives again
Knowing that it was gone forever.
Yes, it was gone forever.

The branches peek at the area
Where the bough once breathed
In the scarce hope
To have a glance at it.
But, it wasn’t there.
The stone of sorrow struck them.
It struck them hard
And their souls shattered
Into a million fragments.
The branches doubt
If they would ever find a smile
In the piles of tears and pain
And if their lives would ever return to normal.
But yes, they do.
Their lives return to normal, gradually.
The area where the bough breathed
But, they pray for its happiness
In its heavenly abode.
The bough mixes with the soil and disappears.
But, it will always be present
In the hearts of the loving branches.
