Villanelles

Granddaughter and Xylophone

Who knows what an eye with little knowledge sees?
A xylophone with pink and yellow notes;
Tink, tonk your sounds fly up to the trees.

I lift and hold you firmly round your knees
to show you blackbird chicks’ gaping throats.
Who knows what an eye with little knowledge sees?

You gesture at the xylophone, “If you please!”
It seems that Mother Nature doesn’t get your vote.
Tink, tonk your sounds fly up to the trees

until you pause charmed by the careful tease
of a stalking cat with shiny tabby coat.
Who knows what an eye with little knowledge sees?

I shoo the cat off so the garden is at ease.
To celebrate you twirl a stick and showboat.
Tink, tonk your sounds fly up to the trees.

The cat grooms and pretends to search for fleas.
Over the garden the blackbird’s singing floats.
Who knows what an eye with little knowledge sees?
Tink, tonk your sounds fly up to the trees.
